Over 55s are most likely to CHEAT on their spouse and scientists claim THIS is why

A study from the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) found that couples who are over 55 years old report more cases of extramarital sex.

Older lovers are having more affairs than their younger counterparts.

A whopping 20 per cent of people over the age of 55 say their relationship is adulterous – meaning one in five are looking for sex outside of their marriage.

The IFS, based in the States, found: “Starting after 2004, Americans over 55 began reporting rates of extramarital sex that were about five or six percentage points higher than were being offered by younger adults.

“By 2016, 20 per cent of older respondents indicated that their marriages were nominally adulterous, compared to 14 per cent for people under 55.”

Extra analysis discovered that most of the people reporting affairs have been married between 20 and 30 years.

Researchers speculated that the cause of this usual attitude may be down to what people experienced in youth, and not the fact they had grown older.

They wrote: “Perhaps the propensity for extramarital sex is a product of what people experienced while growing up, not a question of how old they are.”

The fact that those on their 50s now grew up in the 60s and 70s may influence their sex lives more than simply being with their partners a long time.

Researchers said: “These are the first generations to come of age during the sexual revolution, so it’s understandable they are more likely to have sex with someone without their spouses.

“They may have firsthand experience with 1970s-era experiments with nonmonogamy.

“A few people born in the late 1950s may have had swingers for parents, leading offspring to question taboos surrounding infidelity.”

In other sex-related news, erectile dysfunction could have found a cure in a bizarre treatment.

Erectile dysfunction can cause a lot of trauma for men suffering from the condition.

The NHS described erectile dysfunction (ED) as “the inability to get and maintain an erection”.

It said: “Erectile dysfunction is a very common condition, particularly in older men. It is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will have it to some degree.”
