How to save money in the run-up to Christmas: THIS trick will make you cash savvy

Look for retailers on cash back websites

Check whether the retailer you are looking to buy from is listed on cash back. Sites such as Quidco or TopCashback can offer discounts of up to 50 per cent off.

Loyalty points

Use points you have been collecting all year on presents for people. Many loyalty card holders may also be entitled to a range of offers and freebies.

Make a budget and stick to it

Write down how much you plan to spend on presents and food and this will make it easier to resist impulse spending on unnecessary items.

Sell last year’s unused gifts online or save unwanted gifts for next year

Rather than letting a gift you received last year go to waste you can earn some cash by selling it online or giving it to so someone else who might make more use of it.

Shop with credit cards which offer cash back

Cards like American Express and Capital One give you money back for using their cards – just make sure you clear the balance at the end of each month!

Opt for makeshift gifts

They say it is the thought that counts, so save hundreds of pounds by making presents.

Secret Santa

Instead of buying gifts for everyone do Secret Santa. Get a group of people together, draw a person’s name out a hat and you can avoid the hefty costs of buying everyone you know a gift.

Price-check parcel delivery

The easiest delivery option may not be the cheapest, so shop around for the best rate. Discount courier services may have a cheaper offer.
