BREAKING: Donald Trump could be IMPEACHED after Democrat files official papers

Representative Brad Sherman claims the firing of former FBI Director James Comey amounts to obstruction of justice.

And he believes that doing so while Mr Comey was investigating Russian meddling into the US election strengthens his case.

He also highlights the recent news regarding the President’s son Donald Trump Jr, who is accused of meeting with a Russia lawyer over supposedly damaging information about his father’s rival Hillary Clinton.

In a statement today, Mr Sherman claimed this indicates Mr Trump’s campaign “was eager to receive assistance from Russia”.

And he adds that he believes the President “had something to hide” when he “tried to curtail” the wider Russia investigation.

The statement from mr Sherman’s office read: “Every day Democrats, Republicans, and the entire world are shocked by the latest example of America’s amateur President.

“Ignorance accompanied by a refusal to learn.  Lack of impulse control, accompanied by a refusal to have his staff control his impulses.

“We’re no longer surprised by any action, no matter how far below the dignity of the office—and no matter how dangerous to the country.

“But the Constitution does not provide for the removal of a President for impulsive, ignorant incompetence.

“It does provide for the removal of a President for High Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

This is the first time an impeachment article has been offered against Mr Trump.

The move requires a majority vote in the House, which is currently controlled by Republicans who have a 24-seat advantage – meaning the article is unlikely to win.

And so far, only one other Democrat – Texas Representative Al Green – has publicly expressed support for impeachment proceedings.

But the California Democrat said that he hoped introducing the paperwork would serve as a warning to the administration.

Mr Sherman added that he never expected he would want to elevate Vice President Mike Pence to the Oval Office.

He said: “I served with Mike Pence in Congress for twelve years and I disagree with him on just about everything.

”I never dreamed I would author a measure that would put him in the White House.
